Thanks to Shawn in TR for finding this news!
Timber Ridge is situated between two of Merriam’s three total level crossings, less than 1100 feet from two of North America’s busiest tracks.
As such, residents have been able to count passing time by the train horns. — This is about to change!
Merriam Mayor Ken Sissom is working with BNSF Railroad on a plan to bring stationary directed horns to each crossing which will not need to be as loud. Activated automatically by oncoming trains, the Quiet Zone system drastically reduces noise pollution from level crossings.
Within a year, and at a projected cost of $500,000, the ‘automated horn system’ will be in place. Trains will no longer blow their horns, and stationary horns mounted at the crossing, focused only at the relevant motorists, will sound.
Residents will enjoy greater peace and quiet at all hours, safety, and improved property values. Voice your support by emailing the mayor today!
